“7/11” is a song recorded by American singer Beyoncé from the reissue of her fifth studio album Beyoncé (2013), subtitled Platinum Edition (2014). It was released on November 25, 2014, by Columbia Records as the second single from the reissue. The song was written by Beyoncé and Alonzo Holt; the latter collaborated with Bobby Johnson during the production process. “7/11” is a trap song with elements of hip hop present in its composition. It features rap-singing vocals by Beyoncé over a warped up-tempo beat.
Upon its release, “7/11” received mixed reviews by music critics, with some of them praising its club-ready and frenetic sound while others criticized its use of auto-tune. Its accompanying music video was premiered through YouTube on November 21, 2014. The visual was praised for its personal, relaxed and fun nature and critics deemed it a departure from Beyoncé’s other high-budget videos on the visual album. “7/11” peaked at number 13 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. Among its component charts, it earned Beyoncé her eighth number one on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop chart and her 22nd number one on the Hot Dance Club Songs chart.
On November 5, 2014, it was announced through a press release by Parkwood Entertainment that Beyoncé would release a platinum edition of her self-titled fifth studio album on November 24, 2014, containing a disc on the album titled Beyoncé: More which would include two new songs titled “7/11” and “Ring Off”. On November 19, 2014, 30-second snippets of the two songs appeared online along with reports that “7/11” would impact radio stations on November 25. The following day, the full versions of both songs surfaced on the Internet. “7/11” was sent to urban contemporary radio stations in the United States on November 25, 2014, and contemporary hit radio in Italy on November 28, 2014. The remix is released for Skrillex and Diplo, conforming a DJ group: Jack Ü
“7/11” was written by Beyoncé, Bobby Johnson and Detail, while the production was handled by the latter along with Bobby Johnson and Sidney Swift. Beyoncé further served as the song’s vocal producer, while the co-production was finished by Detail and Sidney Swift. It was recorded with guidance by Stuart White at two studios – Record Plant in Los Angeles and Le Royal Monceau in Paris. Ramon Rivas and Jon Schacter served as the assistants of the track’s audio engineering while Tony Maserati and Stuart White were responsible for its mixing. The mastering was finished by Dave Kutch at The Mastering Palace in New York City.
“7/11” is an up-tempo hip hop track complete with Auto-Tune. Its production consists of trap, and R&B elements accompanied by a “rattling” bassline. Caitlin White from MTV News noted that it was “all beats and bragging” with Beyoncé’s vocals seldom transferring into her singing voice. Gerrick D. Kennedy from Los Angeles Times likened the singer’s rap-singing in a warbly double-time cadence to her early work with the girl group Destiny’s Child. 7/11″ was also noted for containing Southern rap “swagger. Her vocal performance was further noted for being filled with “intensity” and Nicki Minaj–esque wails while singing the staccato rap verses. Allison Piwowarski opined that the song’s title refers to the drinking game “Sevens, Elevens, and Doubles”, as the singer hints in lines like “… I’m thinkin’ bout that alcohol / Man it feel like rolling dice / seven eleven … .
In the United States, the single debuted at number 18 on the Billboard Hot 100 and peaked at number 13. It debuted at number 3 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs following its first week of availability as a digital download from the Platinum Edition reissue, having sold 85,000 copies that week. The debut position on the former chart marked the second highest entrance for the singer on the chart after “Drunk in Love” which premiered at number 12. The song also topped Billboard’s Hot Dance Club Songs, becoming the singer’s twenty-second number one song on the chart, tying her with Rihanna for second most number ones on the chart, only behind Madonna with 46. In the United States, “7/11” debuted at the top on the R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Songs chart, becoming her first number one on the chart. On March 5, 2015, the Recording Industry Association of America certified the single platinum for shipment of 1,000,000 copies in the United States.
In the United Kingdom, it debuted at numbers 36 and 2 on the UK Singles Chart and the UK R&B Chart respectively on December 6, 2014. The single debuted at number 11 on the French Singles Chart on December 6, 2014. “7/11” made its debut in Australia at number 59 on the country’s ARIA Singles Chart for the chart issue dated December 1, 2014, and peaked at number 41 a week later.

In the United States, the song peaked at number seven on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Grande’s fourth consecutive top-ten single off the album and making her the artist with the most top-ten singles in 2014. The song also became The Weeknd’s first top ten entry in the US. The Hannah Lux Davis-directed video finds Grande writhing on a sandy floor and The Weeknd walking through a rainstorm. As of April 2018, the song had sold 1.7 million copies in the United States, and has since been certified triple platinum by the RIAA.
The collaboration between Grande and The Weeknd was pushed by their mutual label, Republic Records. Grande and The Weeknd were up-and-coming artists in 2013, with both releasing their debut albums that year. In an interview with Billboard, Republic Records executive vice president Charlie Walk stated, “The Weeknd is positioned to be best new artist of 2014. He is that guy. Producer Max Martin sent The Weeknd an unfinished version of the track. According to The Weeknd, “It was a great song, but it was a little generic. I couldn’t hear myself on it. So I changed it and made it dark.” Martin liked The Weeknd’s revised lyrics. The Weeknd later recalled that “It was kind of like the label giving me an alley-oop. I think that’s where the stars aligned for me. When I see an opening I penetrate it. In June 2014, Walk posted a photo on his Instagram with the caption, “When you talk about artist development and pure talent, The Weeknd comes to mind. I just heard a duet with a female friend of ours that’s a global smash. Can’t wait for the fall!.” Later, it was revealed that the collaborator was Ariana Grande.
The song received critical acclaim upon its release. Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic noted that Grande allowed the Weeknd to “suck up” the spotlight on the track. Jason Lipshut of Billboard noted that “the pairing somehow makes sense,” praising the Weeknd’s “ultra-sincere crooning” and the “driving guitar riff” for being “delicious 80’s cheese”. Mikael Wood of the Los Angeles Times called it a “darker (and more fully realized) R&B jam than anyone probably expected from a 21-year-old singer once known for her endless supply of pastel princess dresses.” Kitty Empire of The Guardian wrote that the song’s “saturated, mid-tempo atmospherics” stand out, noting that Weeknd’s “own sleaze quotient is radically toned down here, but this remains sophisticated stuff, where Grande surprisingly holds her own. Michelle Geslani of Consequence of Sound labelled it “yearning and infectious,” calling the pairing “a match made in vocal heaven — Grande’s feathery vox and The Weeknd’s slick croon complement one another rather perfectly. Bradley Stern wrote for Idolator that the track is “an irresistibly smooth synth-pop production,” while Carolyn Menyes of Music Times was very receptive with the duo, writing that “they meld really well together.
In the United States, after spending a couple of weeks on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart, “Love Me Harder” made its official debut on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 79. The following week, it jumped to number 57 before ascending to number 37 in its third week, becoming the Weeknd’s first top-40 single on the chart. In its fifth week, after the music video’s official release, “Love Me Harder” soared to its peak of number seven, becoming Grande’s fourth consecutive top-ten single from My Everything, and fifth overall. By becoming her fourth top ten single, Grande became the singer with most top ten entries of 2014, along with her past top ten singles “Problem”, “Break Free”, and “Bang Bang”. In addition, “Love Me Harder” became the Weeknd’s first top ten entry on the Billboard Hot 100. As of April 2018, the song had sold 1.7 million copies in the United States and has been certified triple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
